about

As a singer, Alex has a way of provoking two not-quite contradictory revelations in the listener. The first (and I think they probably usually occur in this order) is that this kind of highest-level artistic performance almost definitionally contains elements of the supernatural. The second is that to sing a song beautifully is an eminently human thing to do, as natural as breathing, a deep, flesh-and-blood expression of universal personness. More near-contradictions stack up when it becomes clear that his access to our shared primordial cosmic guts is exactly what sets Alex so far above the vast majority of singers in general; his ability to tap into some of the broadest, most common human conditions is what makes him so totally unique.
As a composer, same deal. An Alex Samaras song goes precisely where it needs to go in order to fulfill the promise it made us in its first fifteen seconds. Many of our world's songs, even some pretty good ones, seemingly come into being through nothing so much as the checking-off of a list of ostensibly essential components. By the end of one of Alex’s songs, we’re moved not only by the sheer good old-fashioned gorgeousness of the thing, but also, whether we know it or not, by the bone-deep commitment to its subject and content that wrought its lovely, unusual shape way back when it was born.
